TV as monitor, one of my biggest secrets it efficient work
Using a TV as a PC Monitor for Gaming and Work: Why I’m Never Going Back
For years, the “proper” way to use a PC was simple: buy a monitor, sit close, and accept the limited screen size as part of the deal. But the moment I switched to using a TV as my main PC display, everything changed. After several years of working and gaming on a large TV screen, I can confidently say: I’m not going back to small monitors as my main screen. The experience is simply too good. In my usage - multiple pc's needed and multiple monitors, spatial awareness is awakened and i can do few things at once saving time. Of course i am not using always all monitors. As on photo main pc is Central TV and side 27'' monitors with another tv not visible on wall (Sony 48'').
Let’s break down why using a TV as a PC monitor is not only possible, but in many cases better—for productivity, gaming, comfort, and overall immersion.
1. Size-to-Distance Ratio: The Key to Comfort
The biggest question people ask is: How far should I sit from a TV used as a monitor on my desk?
Here’s a simple, practical rule:
40–43" TV → 70–90 cm distance
48–50" TV → 80–100 cm distance
55" TV → 90–120 cm distance
65" TV → 100–140 cm distance
This ratio keeps text sharp, prevents eye strain, and gives you a natural field of view.
Unlike monitors, TVs are designed to be viewed from a distance, so when you match the size with the right seating position, the experience becomes incredibly comfortable. Important is to measure yourself and remember - first experience is abit strange - you were never this close to tv right? Be able to adjust distance!
2. The Pluses of Using a TV as a Monitor
A. Immersive Gaming Like Never Before
Games on a big screen feel alive. Open‑world titles look massive, racing games feel cinematic, and even simple indie games gain a sense of scale that small monitors can’t match.
A 55" or 65" TV turns your desk into a personal home theater. Once you experience a huge, vibrant display at arm’s length, traditional 24–32" monitors feel tiny and cramped.
B. Productivity Becomes Effortless
Working on a TV is surprisingly easy:
Multiple windows side by side
Huge spreadsheets without constant zooming
More space for timelines, code editors, or design tools
Less scrolling, more overview
It feels like having two or three monitors in one seamless panel—no bezels, no alignment issues, no cable clutter.
C. Better Value for Size
A 55" 4K TV often costs less than a 32" 4K monitor. You get more screen, more features, and often better HDR performance for the same or lower price.
3. Input Lag and Choosing the Right TV
This is where many people get nervous: “Aren’t TVs slow?”
Not anymore—if you choose the right model.
What to look for:
Game Mode with low input lag (10–15 ms is excellent)
HDMI 2.1 for 4K 120 Hz support (if you want high refresh rates)
Good pixel response time (OLED is king here)
Chroma 4:4:4 support for sharp text
PC mode or Input Label: PC option
Modern TVs—especially OLED and high‑end LED models—are extremely responsive. For everyday work and gaming, input lag is a non‑issue when the TV is configured correctly.
OLED vs LED
OLED: Best image quality, perfect blacks, instant response time
LED: Cheaper, brighter, no burn‑in concerns
Both work great depending on your needs and budget.
4. Real‑World Experience: Why I’m Not Going Back
I’ve been using a TV as my main PC monitor for several years now. During that time, I’ve tested traditional monitors again and again—and every time, they feel like a downgrade.
Here’s why:
The workspace feels too small
Games lose their cinematic impact
Multitasking becomes cramped
The immersion simply disappears
A large TV gives me the freedom to work comfortably, enjoy games at a scale they deserve, and relax without switching devices. It’s a single screen that does everything.
5. Final Thoughts
Using a TV as a PC monitor isn’t a weird experiment anymore—it’s a legitimate, powerful setup for both work and gaming. With the right size, distance, and TV model, you get:
A massive, immersive display
Great productivity
Excellent gaming performance
Better value than many monitors
After years of using a TV as my main screen, I can say with full confidence: I’m not returning to small monitors. The experience is simply too good to give up.
